Tried advice from Gemini, but it can’t seem to answer the question, what they say doesn’t work. So I know cmd-shift-5 brings up a small bar at the bottom of the screen. Supposedly I can choose a screen capture as an image or start a video recording. I kept getting a very short (horizontal) bar with Capture at the end. No way to change that to Record. Once ON Record, I see options to do the static screen capture. I HAD been getting Record, but now it’s back to Capture with no way of changing it to Record.
That’s very strange. You should see a control strip with various buttons to indicate what you want to capture (entire screen, window, or arbitrary area, and the same for video). The active button at the far right changes from Capture to Record depending on the mode you’ve selected.
Perhaps you moved the bar so some of the icons are off the screen?
In the ‘onscreen toolbar’ are three icons on the left then a faint vertical line and three similar icons to the right. If you cllick any of the three on the right, the blue button should change from ‘Capture’ to ‘Record’.
Perhaps I wasn’t explaining as clearly as I might. Yes, I know about the 6 buttons across. but sometimes when I do the cmd-shift-5 I get a dialog with only 3 buttons, kinda indicating I was just doing a screenshot. Not sure how I got stuck there, but by randomly clicking stuff I got it back to record. Im leaving it that way because I always use cmd-shift-4 to do screen captures.
The toolbar seems a bit flaky, sometimes the Capture or record button shows and sometimes not, and not consistently with which of the 3 options I click.
In my short experience I have not found it displaying only 3 buttons for screenshots. Odd. Looking forward to reading the solution.
I was able to screenshot the toolbar when doing a full screen capture, from which I could crop I suppose, or just copy the image on the referenced Apple page.
Wow! I suspect it was fussing with the 6 icon bar that got me the 3 button bar. I’ve got it doing the 6 button one now, like I said I’ll not try and choose any of the static captures as I can use the cmd-shift-4 command.
Oh wait, I just managed to get the 3 box one… because when I hit the 5 and got the 6 button bar, the cursor turned into a camera icon… if I click it nothing happened (well, a screen flash) BUT the next time I hit the 5, it comes up with the 3 button bar.
Actually, there is an ulterior motive here, when I was playing on my nVidia 980 on my cm 5,1, I got great recording and didn’t drop a frame because the function was built into the video card. Now to see how some native ability works!
