Just a heads-up that our developer is going to be migrating this server to a new host sometime in the early morning Eastern time on Thursday, 9/25. We hit a situation where we couldn’t upgrade Discourse in place anymore due to software dependencies, so getting to a new version of the operating system will remove those and allow future upgrades.
Eli tells me the downtime will probably be for about an hour while he does a backup and restore pass. So, don’t panic if you can’t get in during that time.
Looks like it worked. And I see the comment-editor is different. There’s now a single-pane editor. But I’m switching back to the traditional Markdown editor.
I had to re-login, but that makes sense. I assume the database of login tokens/cookies was reset in the process.
Yes, Eli had trouble on Thursday morning, but his second try on Friday morning was successful, so we’re running the latest Discourse again.
The toggle button in the upper-left of the composer controls whether you type in Markdown or some formatted mode. I think I’ll also be switching back to Markdown, though I should give the formatted mode a little more of a chance.
And yes, I assume everyone will have to login again.
Though I post from the web site, I read TidBITS Talk in mailing list mode.
Since the migration, all the TidBITS Talk posts come to me “From: ace@tidbits.com”.
I’m sure everybody knows that I love all TidBITS Talkers equally, but some are more equal than others, and @ace is the equalest of them all. I could get used to it, but it’s a bit disconcerting to have a mailbox full of messages that appear to be directly from His Eminence.
(I see this was also noted in the “Mail Filter Not Working…” thread, but I don’t filter on From: so I’m not affected in that way. It’s mostly a cosmetic thing.)
And again, use the toggle in the upper left of the composer to switch back.
I looked into this, and I think it’s to improve compatibility with DMARC because we didn’t have a talk.tidbits.com DMARC record. I’ve switched it to TidBITS Talk tidbits-talk@tidbits.com so it uses the tidbits.com DMARC settings. Let’s see if that helps things.
Ever since the interruption the icons have changed and the Notifications list has become a whole lot dense but with no icons. The editor window can be restored. Those other two I cannot see how.
