I am getting flooded with messages about my email. My original email (tidbits@paulc.com, my own domain) worked just fine for years until 4/28/25. I have verified it as correct at least half a dozen times… i.e., I can send mail to it and get the mail delivered. A few months back, I THOUGHT I had changed it to another one, but after digging around, I see it wasn’t changed. Pretty sure I went through the process. So I again tried to change that email BUT it seems I can not change it because “Email can be updated from authentication provider..” I have no idea what that means, but I have no ability to actually change that email.
If someone would send a direct email, not through your system, you may see the address as correct. My suspicion is the mail is dying inside your system. Not sure what to do now…
We were discussing this privately back in December. The problem is that @tidbits41’s ISP marks email from TidBITS Talk as spam, and Discourse responds back to the error message the ISP sends. I’ve reset the bounce score again just now, so it will stop briefly but likely start up again.
In the last back-and-forth, we were discussing changing the email address, which has to be done on the TidBITS site (Edit Profile at https://tidbits.com/membership/) since that’s the source of all account-related details at Discourse.
If it’s to make a difference, the new address has to be at a different provider, like iCloud or Gmail or Fastmail.
Yes, I had that trouble with my personal email address (hosted at hover.com). TidBITS email got bounced without me ever knowing it had come in (ie, it didn’t appear in my spam folder). Talking to tech support over there took some pressing, but I think that TidBITS was on a blacklist they used and thus never made it to me. The first time, they whitelisted it and TidBITS mail came through for awhile but then it went back to bouncing. So I switched to a gmail address and that’s been fine.
Sorry I had no idea there were any responses so I posted another message (I’ll try and delete it if I can). Just did go and change my address. My ISP is Network Solutions, not some fly by night outfit. I THINK I whitelisted “tidbits.com.” I’ll have to call them about that as I can’t do that through my account management. Is that the correct domain?
Could it be that I have “tidbits” as my email user? I did run into an issue with another outfit that wasn’t accepting my custom email, so I changed t t one where their full name was noot listed and tyat has worked since that time (about 2 years ago).
It looks like you added a period in the middle of the username on the main TidBITS site, but that hasn’t propogated to TidBITS Talk yet. I’m not sure why—it should have. But again, I very much doubt it will make any difference. A proper test would be an address at a different domain, like your iCloud address.
Yes, I did manage to change my mail and low and behold, I’ve now gotten 2 emails with the summaries (5/4 and 5/11). Seems pretty clear the username does matter.
I don’t really have an icloud address, suppose I could create one. It’s clearly not on my end, I can send all the mails I want to with the old or the new address. I’m not sure what my creating an icloud address will “prove.” Seems it would only indicate the problem all along lies in your system. Just look at the new address, it doesn’t propagate to Talk…
As it’s my own domain, I’ll try another username, let’s see how that works. At least, that might show the issue all along is your system’s dealing with an email “username.”
So I changed the mail to something that doesn’t mention tid, bits or the 2 of them. NOW it appears that mail did get propagated to Talk. Let’s see how it goes from here.
Well, that’s great! There must be some odd spam filtering at your ISP.
Does your Apple Account only use your @paulc.com address? If nothing else, you could create a Hide My Email address to use, and that would have an @icloud.com domain.
Yes, it uses a @paulc.com address. I think it telling that the edit I did to my original email didn’t “propagate” as you said. But when I completely changed the addressee, it propagated right away. At least now, I’m getting the summaries and the email response when someone posts in a thread I have started.
Look Adam, I don’t want to belabor this, at least things seem to be working now. Like I said, I’ve experiencd this before (a few times) where some corp. refuses to let me use their name (or part of it) as my email (this is my auto sorting system). Apple doesn’t do it, amazon doesn’t do it.
