Macintouch website on Safari

Anybody else having issues with this loading? Up to date iPad Air 4. I’ve changed nothing but it won’t load the last 3 or 4 days…progress bar says it’s done but page is blame. Loads fine in Firefox.

It is loading on Safari on my MacAir M2. I have had that happen before though. I figured it a temporary thing. I was thinking that the site wasn’t playing nicely with Safari’s privacy environment.

Tried it just now (Ventura Mac), and can confirm that
https://www.macintouch.com
won’t load in Safari (blank page), but will load in Firefox…

(notice that Discourse also cannot load a preview - it generates an error as well

Sorry, we were unable to generate a preview for this web page, because the web server returned an error code of 403. Instead of a preview, only a link will appear in your post. cry

Worked for me on a MBP OS 14.6 and Safari 17.6

No problems how with MacIntouch loading on Safari 17.6 on M1 MacMini 6 or MacBook Air (2020) both running MacOs 14.6. However, intermittently, MacIntouch does fail to load, leaving blank page. When it doesn’t load in Safari, it also doesn’t load in Firefox.

This happens if you have Hide IP address from Websites and Trackers on in Safari Prefs. Change it to Trackers only or go to View, Reload and Show IP Address (temporary fix).

That used to work for me, but now even that doesn’t work. I also disabled Malwarebytes Browser Guard and Stop The Madness Pro. I made sure my VPN was turned off. I made sure my Little Snitch was not blocking it. (Yes, I have a lot of shields up.) The result is that MacInTouch shows a blank page in both my Safari (17.5) and Firefox (128.0.3) on my MacBook Air 2022, Sonoma 14.5.

I used to read it quite often and I remember Ric Ford (who runs it) had to continue cranking down protections due to the amount of spam and fake accounts he was having to deal with. When it got to be too much, and he was having so many family issues, he had to stop allowing discussions so the value to me went down. Note that he highly recommended his readers move to TidBITS if they wanted to continue having discussions, which is how I ended up here. I agree with him, TidBITS is an outstanding resource. Since I can’t seem to make it work for me, I’ve pretty much given up on MacInTouch, although it was very helpful for a long time.

Big fan of Ric Ford, who has been a great resource forever for the Mac community. I too have plenty of browsing extensions safeguards on. Before I used VPN, I did not have a problem. Now that I use a VPN, the site does not load regularly. Every once in a while, it will load, but it is unreliable and loads of hassle to access, sadly. Nice to know I am not the only person getting blocked.
I usually get an error message saying “Advanced blocking in effect.”
Not sure how hard it would be, but would be nice to be able to apply and for Macintouch supporters to get some permission to access.
best,

No problem here with Monterey, Safari 17.6, Studio Ultra M1… Both “Prevent cross-site tracking” and “Hide IP address from trackers” are checked. No VPN.

Definitely miss the full MacInTouch.

Yes, Ric’s an old friend, and I appreciated his recommendation since TidBITS Talk has distinctly benefited from some of the MacInTouch readers moving over here.

Works now…but I wonder if iPadOS 17.6 changed that as it worked before.

Pretty much explains how I ended up here. Was a regular contributer to his site.

I like it here, too!

P.S. No issues visiting his site on Mac or iOS–but the problem may have been solved.

For what it’s worth, no joy on iPadOS, works fine on iOS and macOS version of Safari. Latest versions of all.

I normally have Private Relay enabled. MacInTouch did not come up when initially linked. However, I tapped on the ‘Font’ item on the left side of the search bar and tapped 'Show IP Address. ’ After a warning that I was breaking anonymity, the web page was visible.

Just as an aside, I find it amusing that often the only way to report a problem is via an online form. So if users cannot access that form then the webmaster (remember them!) doesn’t know there is a problem. My ISP in Australia is in that category :sunglasses:

I couldn’t access Macintouch when I was traveling in India. Apparently lots of nefarious stuff going on there so access is blocked to Macintouch from Indian IP addresses. VPN was likewise a no-go.

For several weeks, Safari on my iPhone has produced a blank page for Macintouch. Latest version of iOS always. No such issue with Google Chrome.

This often happens to me too on my Mac running the latest version of Monterey OS 12 and the latest version of Safari that it supports (17.6). If I have forgotten to uncheck the Website tracking and the Hide IP address boxes on the Privacy tab in Safari prefs, before going to MacInTouch, I will have to use the “Manage Website Data” button, search for MacInTouch, and remove the entry before I can regain access to the MacInTouch site. Sometimes you may need to restart Safari if it still can’t connect.
BTW, this also happens when I visit my bank’s website when I want to get an e-statement. Apparently it calls up another network to get the statement. Luckily, they have a notice that mentions turning off the two settings in Safari, and I have to clear out it’s entry Website Data too if I have forgotten to first take the steps above.

Update, as of 12 August, Macintouch website loading for me on Safari. Did not change a thing.
Good news.
best to all.

For the first time a few days ago, the Macintouch website shows “403 Forbidden Access to this resource on the server is denied!” message in my preferred browser – every time I try. Non-preferred browsers load the site fine.

I haven’t changed anything. Hopefully Ric fixes something, or I guess I’ll stop reading it for the first time in decades.
