CarPlay split screen icon removed in iOS 18?

This used to show a split screen icon to indicate that it’s taking you to the view where the right and left sides have separate widgets. Now it just shows this, making it unclear which of three screen layouts you’re about to navigate to.

It’s a first world problem, but I wonder why Apple did this? Seems like a functionality regression.

It does change to a grid if you press it and go to the other view. At least on mine.

Yes it shows the familiar grid icon when the grid layout is what’s coming next. But it never shows the split screen icon at all anymore, even when split screen is what’s coming next when you press it.

This is what it used to look like:

It’s the same icon used on the Home button on non-Face iPhones. I suspect that this is getting out in front of CarPlay 2, which will have a lot more flexibility for how screens are configured. We can now infer that the “map & audio & information” display is considered the Home Screen.

Also note that the grid icon representing the app directory view used to be 2x4, now it is 3x3. Again, CarPlay 2?

This was also my hunch. CP2 I know supports a whole bunch of screens. It’s hard to believe, though, that there will no longer be any switching between full screen and split screen, esp on the millions of cars like mine that will only ever have one screen. And in fact, it does still switch; it just no longer informs you where you’re headed…
