SoundSource 5.8.5

Originally published at: https://tidbits.com/watchlist/soundsource-5-8-5/

Rogue Amoeba has released SoundSource 5.8.5 to address a few regressions introduced in the previous version. The audio control utility fixes a bug that could caused audio artifacts to be heard with devices that lack volume control, ensures that audio from the Screen Sharing app works as expected, resolves an issue with audio synchronization not working correctly when directing audio to Multi-Output Devices, and updates the ARK plug-in to version 12.2.7 to fix a bug that could cause sample rate adjustments to be lost when the Mac was restarted. ($39 new with a 20% discount for TidBITS members, free update, 44.5 MB, release notes, macOS 14.5+)

This app is so good that I just got rid of both of my BOOM apps! The control and quality of sound are outstanding! Lord, if Apple only had the sense to build this into their M-Series iMacs, they would be devastating!!! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

It’s one of my non-negotiables… it has to be on any system I’ve got running.

It was indeed the search for a boom replacement that made me discover Rogue Amoeba, and after testing Soundsource I licensed all their apps. It’s fairly easy to notice that Soundsource was written by people who professionally work with sound. It also supports pro plugins and I have mvMeter installed, just for fun (it’s a set of free, old fashioned VU meters)

Fred, my mind is stone, I have to confess! I installed mvMeter2, but I don’t know how to get it to launch!

First off, read the manual - it is an effect so keep in mind when treated wrong it can affect your sound output (attentuate or amplify it) if you turn too many dials, it takes some getting used to.

To activate:

On the right side of the output selection, click the button to expand.
You will get a box under the ‘Output’ item which has on the left a button “Add effect”.
Click that, and you’ll find mvMeter there.

You may also see a number of Apple effects and other things there, feel free to experiment as you can add, remove or just disable at leasure (just be careful with your volume). If mvMeter vanishes, just click on its entry in that effects lists to make it re-appear, and you can ‘pin’ it so it stays visible.

Hope this helps

Yup, that worked! Wow, such an old-time look… love it!

For getting started just now (yes, don’t look at me like that) in podcasting is Rogue Amoeba’s Farrago the best choice or is there another RA product that would do the job?

Quick question, can SoundSource redirect the sound output of one app to the sound input of another. Silly example: can I have the the sound being played by Music.app be the input to Quicktime so I can record that sound in a new file?

I don’t think so. But Rogue Amoeba’s Audio Hijack is designed for exactly that purpose.
