I entered acme weather I got an ad and 2 other weather apps before the actual target of my search showed up. Now -I would naively expect- the first item to be the best textual match for my search. Clearly Apple has a different idea of how search results are ordered (popularity? rating?)
Now I’m not going to use the Doctorow S-word. But I’ll sure imply it!
Yes, you would think so, but that’s not the modern way. I believe I mentioned it before, but Amazon’s search engine is even worse. I type in some (short) product description, then choose the exact product that I want from the resulting dropdown menu, and the product I chose from the offerings is not even on the results page—anywhere.
Use quotes when searching for a specific bit of text. That is, “acme weather” This makes it the first result after the paid placements. This is pretty much how search engines have worked for 30 years.
Well, what I saw (no quotes on the search term) was the most conforming result was third, one ad and 2 other weather apps. That’s what surprised/disappointed me. Ads just disgust me, but as we all know, they’re a fact of life on the Internet.
