I got used to renaming my photos in a Finder Window in Cover Flow View.
Now I am trying to do that work from a MBAir on Sequoia 15.2 over local network to a MBPro on Sierra.
I tried various View options in Sequoia to achieve: photos in a pane and List View in another pane (above/below not esp important) and it doesn’t seem possible to replicate in Sequoia.
Vaguely I recall something about Apple losing a lawsuit over having copied the Cover Flow View, hence the Gallery View.
The Gallery View doesn’t work for me, I need a List and a view of multiple images, as I often rename 5-10 or more images at once.
First workaround attempt:
I opened two windows for the same network folder, set one to sidebar off, list view, sorted by date created ascending, and tiled it left. Another window I set to sidebar off, icon view, sorted by date created (ascending/descending not an option in icon view apparently, or how to set it so?), and tiled it right.
The two views open nicely in a new Space but some oddities are there. When I select files on the List, they are not highlighted in the icon view window. When I rename the files from the list view, random icon previews for the renamed files in the icon view window disappear, replaced with an empty icon holder (preview visible in Quick Look).
While not related to cover flow (but part of the same file renaming activity), one other irritation in Sequoia is the Rename Finder Items window. In Sierra the filename is fully selected when the little renaming window opens. I hold Shift key and click in the field and the text to the right of the cursor is highlighted. In Sequoia, the same shift-click highlights the text to the left of the cursor. Any ideas how to make Sequoia highlight to the right? a Terminal command or change of Settings (I’ve looked and not found one)?
Many thanks to those who read this thru!
If your renaming is based on date and time, the EXIFRenamer app provides a nice way to rename multiple photos using a schema.
When I loaded photos from a camera to a Mac, the first step was always to use EXIFRenamer to provide a meaningful name.
Fascinating app, thank you for the suggestion!
I rename by adding YYMMDD then descriptive text before the file name. That way I can sort by name and they are chronological (the way I like my photos organized) and the original file name is kept if I ever need to refer to it.
The tricky bit about cursor position and highlighting is that say I shot 50 photos of a few subjects today. I select the similar ones, two finger tap and select Rename… enter "250702 Dramatic morning light on SW corner of house ", then move to the next similar set. When I have the Rename window the date doesn’t need changing so I shift-click right of the space after date and earlier this action would highlight the text to the right, and I just start typing.
In Sequoia I have to click-drag to the right, which is less precise and makes extra work and frustration.
