I thought I would bump the notion, since I’ll be interested in that discussion. Feel free to boot this starter conversation for another thread … but thought I’d at least initiate it
Here are my initial thoughts. … 1. Darn, regarding HFS+ Not that I couldn’t have seen that coming. And fortunately I started experimenting with backing up with both HFS+ and APFS mainly because up till now (in my experience) Mac OS still handles standard hard disks better in HFS+ than it handles APFS drives on hard disks. i.e. spinning drives. Let’s pretend Mac OS 27 will improve perfomance on spinning disk drives.
Let me know if this gets attention on a more comprehenive thread.
If they’re deprecating the DVD Player framework, does this also mean that the DVD player app is also going away soon? Will I have to start buying third-party software in order to play movies on my USB SuperDrive?
I didn’t even catch that yet, I was busy at OWC figuring out some solutions

Gosh Darn it,(originally expletive-deleted) I love being able to rig up one of my old region-specific Superdrives to play one of my innumerable foreign language (w/subs) DVDs . Guess I’ll have to finally clean up our craft room and get a universal player and watch on a big screen. Stacks and Stacks of bins of fabrics, and balls of yarn I recently got a DVD that was technically supposed to be spec’d as Region 5, but turned out really to be Region 0 WHEW!
It’s my understanding that BlueRay/DVD players for big screens are pretty much all region-esque … but that’s for a different thread I guess, LOL
Or for DVDs, use Handbrake to get the videos onto a HDD/SSD in a format readable by your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. This also can help protect you against disc-rot and disc player breakdowns.
What’s interesting is that otool -L /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/DVD\ Player.app/Contents/MacOS/DVD\ Player (on Ventura) shows that DVD Player is still dependent on the DVDPlayback framework. I’d be interested to know what the result is on Golden Gate.

My theory is that the DVD Player will be gone, and the reason behind it is so Apple no longer has to pay the licensing fees to the DVD Forum and patent pools.
Not to be “mean” to Apple … My assumption then is that they can force it out as well.
My current MBPro M4 was apparently forced into Tahoe, relegating the Sequoia partition problematic boots. Was never able to confirm the cause, but I believe system install firmware updating was the source.
Perhaps all Apple has to do is force a Mac OS 27 on any system compatible, therefore forcing, so to speak, these depracations
I ran the same check on Tahoe. It’s also listed there.
But in response to my comment, Howard Oakley wrote that the app migrated away from that framework a few years ago. So I don’t know. Maybe it’s only there for when you run the Intel version (via Rosetta).
It wouldn’t surprise me. But then I’ll have to go buy a third-party player app. I really don’t want to have to do that.
I think VLC can play DVD media, but according to a few articles I found, you’ll need to manually install the libdvdcss and related libraries in order to decrypt commercially-produced discs. (Those pages also include ads for their own commercial player app which, of course, claims to do it perfectly.)
But the VLC FAQ says that binary distributions include libdvdcss (as part of a warning that this library is illegal in some countries, including the US). So I think I need to just test it out.
Yeah, but I’ll have to buy several dozen TB of hard drives to store my entire movie collection. And give up several years ripping everything.
The ability to work with DVDs and Blurays is one reason I have kept a 2017 iMac running Mojave as a media server. For security reasons I am thinking of disconnecting it from the internet but keeping it going for local use.
If HFS+ itself were being deprecated in macOS 27, and then jettisoned in macOS 28 and later, I would be groaning.
However, since it’s encrypted HFS+, that’s a lot less of an issue for me. Almost every drive I currently back up is APFS; and the archived legacy backups of older macOS systems I have are in unencrypted HFS+ (and stored offsite in a safe deposit box).
