I’ve subscribed to News+ for several years now and I think the content offerings are first rate however I find the technical implementation to be spotty. For example just recently my magazine downloads started disappearing from the Downloads section, sometimes within mere minutes. Online research revealed no solutions; I tried everything everyone suggested with no luck. Exact same behavior on my phone and iPad, both running most current ios 18.
So I went to a Genius Bar. Very nice guy. Spent almost an hour with me. He saw the problem and we were able to reproduce it numerous times. He had never seen this problem; spoke to some of his colleagues but no luck. The only thing he could suggest was updating to 26 which i am absolutely not doing.
But then yesterday, the downloads started sticking around again. Will have to wait and see.
I love the wide variety available on News+. I think you can also read the Washington Post now, besides the WSJ and LA Times. If you’re paying the crazy rates the NY Times charges, it should be a no-brainer to add News+ for a a great deal more publications for considerably less money.
The NY Times is very inexpensive! After your one year super inexpensive subscription expires all you have to do is try to cancel it and in the process they automatically offer you the same deal again. I’m paying $4 or $5 a month. I’ve done that renewal trick like 5 years in a row now.
Does anyone know if there’s a way to report a date error in AppleNews+? This article from Time, for example, is dated today. But it’s clearly from over a year go.
Regarding access to The Guardian, I have subscribed to its feed in the RSS reader Reeder App for a long time. This year (or recently anyway) a dialog began appearing, when clicking on the article headline to view on the web, that gives the visitor the choice of being tracked by up to 133 partners and seeing ads, or subscribing with money and seeing generic ads. That is sorta kinda a paywall, pay with money or privacy.
Some articles appear in Reeder’s ‘reader mode’ and some don’t. So some fully adless access is there and afaik tracking does not occur when viewing RSS feeds. I usually make an annual donation to them and other publications that I read a lot.
