I haven’t used Apple News for a few years, and I was giving it a try again on my iPhone, iPad, and MBP.
It looks interesting, but I’m curious how article sharing works. In iOS there is, for example, a direct Share to Facebook option. But on the Mac there isn’t. So it looks like I need to copy the link and paste it into Facebook separately. Is that correct?
Also, can Windows and Android users follow the link and somehow read the shared article? I read there is no Windows app for Apple News.
Apple News looks like it’s a good option for regional newspapers to help them stay in business. I read about the income sharing and it seems to have saved quite a few publications. I wish the St. Louis Post-Dispatch would join it, like the Kansas City Star has.
One nice thing: Apple News automatically recognized my separate Washington Post subscription so I can read WP articles there as well. Still, not sure about the sharing though.
I don’t use Apple News, but if it works like other news aggregation sites/apps, the links should point to the article’s original server - where it came from - not to an Apple server.
What do you see when you copy the link and paste it into something like a text editor? Where does it go if you paste it into a browser window?
I would expect that either you’ll have a link to the article’s origin, or you’ll have a link to an Apple redirector which will send you to that site, after logging it (in order to track article popularity and collect other related stats).
It points to an Apple-created URL. For example, I’m in Apple News right now reading a Guardian article (so it’s not behind a paywall).
There’s no “Share to Facebook” like there is in the iOS app, but there is a copy link and that link goes to:

If you go to that first link it goes to a page that tries to open the Apple News app. But there is no Apple News app for Windows.
However good news. I have a BrowserStack account and just tried the first link in Edge in Windows 11 and after a brief display of the Apple News logo it redirects to the Guardian story (with some extra parameters indicating it came via Apple news added to the URL.) Same with FireFox in Windows 11. In fact, on the Mac, if you close the “Open in Apple News” popup it also redirects in the browser. So all is ok.
