iPhone News widgets and Apple News+ with non-paywalled sites

My favorite news widgets (to the left of the home screen) stopped working, so I’ve been using the Apple News widget instead. I wonder if Apple is trying to push them away.

I’m not a subscriber, so I’m using it in free mode. I haven’t done a 30 day trial yet either. I want to see what can be accomplished as a free user first.

I recognize the benefits that Apple News+ has not only for readers, but the potential to save hundreds of publications with dwindling paid subscribers in the modern era. I understand it’s been a book for publications like Scientific American, Popular Mechanics, Vanity Fair, and more.

One thing that drives me crazy though is that some publications, which are not blocked behind paywalls, like Daily Beast, won’t show their articles in Apple News unless you are an Apple News subscriber. I can go to the Daily Beast site directly, for example, and I never get blocked and can find the article I wanted to read. I also don’t get blocked when visiting them via Yahoo News on my Mac. Why do you suppose that happens in Apple News?

I do like that I can read Washington Post articles in Apple News because I separately subscribe to that. It’s too bad the New York Times doesn’t allow that anymore. Note that neither the WP nor the NYT are part of Apple News+ monthly subscriptions.
