Today, 1Password invited me to activate “A native macOS AutoFill Experience”. I did not turn it on. I also do not use the Safari extension – paranoid.
However, Reddit has a discussion about it which includes comments from a 1Password representative:

I just updated 1Password. Did not read what’s new. Then a bit later I went to a website that I was logged out from, and to my great surprise, a message popped up and disappeared before I could read it, and in the same second, the website did a reset, and I was logged in. I did not even see the login page. It was nice, but I hope I get asked on the websites where I have several logins registered.

That actually sounds like a useful interface feature, though I am not a current 1Password user.
Your decision to avoid activating the feature did make me think of my increasing reluctance to activate most changes. It seems increasingly rare for new experiences to be better experiences. It’s an uncomfortable position for me; I’ve always been an early adopter of new tech, and my bias still is very much to try new things. Somewhere along the way, the tradeoff between “new” and “better” no longer feels favorable to me for most established products.

I found the Safari extension to be kind of flaky, so I’m glad that AgileBits finally implemented this feature. One thing I didn’t like about the Safari extension was that unlocking a passkey required only clicking a button. With macOS Autofill, it prompts me to use Touch ID instead.

It’s a very nice & convenient addition to the app that I have been using since 2007.

The new experience works across MacOS apps rather than requiring plug-ins for each one. So far the only thing I’ve had to get used to is looking up at the top of my (large) screen for a 1Password log-in prompt. It is much smoother than the one we’ve been using for many years.

I agree about needing to look in a different spot, but otherwise it seems like an improvement, especially on a few sites that had separate pages for username and password and thus required multiple manual steps before.

I did the same. 1Password has been getting more intrusive and obscures the reveal button in text fields. It also seems to have found passkeys that I did not set up and thus do not want to use, so now it’s delaying me. Given their recent donation to Omarchy and unfeeling excuses for same I will uninstall it.

Where is the associated setting in 1Password?
- I was never asked about a new experience on my iMac (still on macOS 13 Ventura), but I’ve been seeing the new sign-in dialog in Safari
- I did get asked if I wanted the new experience on my MacBook Pro. I just upgraded to macOS 26 Liquid Glass and upgraded 1Password, so I don’t know which upgrade triggered it. Only change I’ve seen there is that signing into TeamViewer using 1Password did not work.
How do you revert it back? It doesn’t work as well as the non-native autoFill experience.
edit: Oh, I see: it is in System Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords > AutoFill from > 1Password.
The problem with the new experience is it takes extra steps:
- Click to enter user id
- Click to enter password
- and presumably click to enter 2FA, etc.
1Password does all the secondary steps automatically once you initiate the first step.
You’re saying it has set up passkeys for you? That seems unlikely. I could imagine a site making passkey creation so easy you didn’t really notice, but you’d have to add it to 1Password through a prompt no matter what.
Not in my experience. It varies a bit by site, of course, but generally speaking, I just click the Sign In link 1Password displays at the top of the screen and it enters the username, password, and clicks Submit without any additional interaction.

Even when the userid and password on are different pages? The one I hit last night is where you first enter the userid, hit Enter or a submit button, then you get a new page where you enter the password. I believe 1Password knows what to do here.
I’m not suggesting that - it could be I took a wrong option when Passwords and 1Password prompts were competing to help with a login, I’m not sure. I’ve always intended to understand passkeys before I start using them.
Agree that 1Password has become more painful lately. I wish Passwords had more of its features though.
What is the significance of their donation to Omarchy? I don’t know much about it. Although featuring X as a site is one of many things that one should object to.
Sounds like Omarchy has a situation similar to Mullvad, where a founder who isn’t involved in day-to-day operations of the company has connections to a political movement.
Is DHH no longer involved?
In situations like this, I always recommend people do their own research. Having said that, my quick look at Omarchy made it appear that DHH is not the current CEO. I didn’t dig around enough to get a read on whether he is on the Board of Directors, works as a “consultant”, uses the CEO as a figurehead, or does other things that let him control Omarchy from behind the scenes.

I definitely have a couple of passkeys in 1Password that I don’t remember ever setting up. I’ve always wondered how they got there. One is for PayPal so I think I must not have been paying sufficient attention at a time when it asked for me to sign in again and it probably told me it was adding a passkey but I was more interested in completing a transaction than reading the verbiage.
Does the new setting allow one to skip using the Safari 1Password plug-in?
Yes, in fact one of the sites I use regularly (Helper Helper) doesn’t even show the password field until you have entered the username, and 1Password’s auto fill works well with that site.
That said, I just tested with the Square site as well, which use a separate pages for username and password, and 1Password failed to auto fill and submit there. So it’s not 100% yet.
