Can anyone explain this, please?
I have online accounts with two UK-based news organisations, which I access using Safari synced between an iMac, an iPad and two iPhones (11 and 13). Latest OS on all of them.
On the iMac, after signing into both accounts initially, I’ve never had to do so again.
On the iPhones, both accounts soon get forgotten and I have to sign in as though for the first time. The sign-in may last a few hours or even a day or more, but it’s variable and unpredictable. This happens only when using Safari – Firefox on the iPhones remembers my accounts indefinitely.
I contacted both organisations for advice. One of them suggested turning off any content blocker (I use Crystal) and clearing website data, which I did, but neither solved the problem. Any ideas?
My first response would be to try clearing all of the site’s cookies – sometimes they can have data that no longer works with the current website code – but you already tried that.
Try turning off Prevent cross-site tracking in Settings > Apps > Safari > Privacy & Security, to see if that’s the culprit.
Apologies for my very slow response - this behaviour is so irregular it takes time to be sure whether or not it’s still happening. But in short, it is - ‘Prevent cross-site tracking’ didn’t solve it. If you have any other suggestions I’ll be delighted to try them! And I might try posting a question to Apple Discussions.
Yes, there’s every chance. I simply don’t know because I wasn’t aware of this feature. On investigation I found 255 private browsing tabs. I’ll try deleting all of them and logging into the problem sites in normal browsing. Thanks, and I’ll report results. It will take a day or two to be sure.
I was sure there must be a simple explanation, and this is it. I was using private browsing without realising. In normal browsing, logins are retained. I’ve learned the lesson. Many thanks.
