I have a 2014 27" iMac Retina and am wondering what to do now that no replacement in sight. I think my choices are a 24" M1 or a Mac Mini with the new 32" Samsung M8 display. The Mini + Samsung is the same power with a larger display and $100 cheaper.
There is nothing in Monterey that I need and the 27" performance is just fine so I’m going to wait until I’m forced to change or something breaks.
I too would not invest much in an Intel mac at this point, especially if you tend to hold on to them for a long time.
One thing to remember about the 24" M1 iMac if the screen size is the only concern, a second external monitor could always be added. From the tech specs:
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at 1 billion colors and:
- One external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz
This would be much cheaper than a studio display and Mac Studio, if the extra processing power of M1 Pro/Max/Ultra wasn’t needed.
Also of note if you have an external monitor already, Amazon has the M1 mac mini for $129 off today, $569 iirc. Lowest price I’ve seen on it, though it’s almost 18 months old at this point.
