I’ve been looking at various apps/services which will read aloud epubs and pdfs. Mostly with the new voices which AI is enabling. Looked at Speechify and NaturalReader. Both do decent (enough) voices, though there are definite limits, meaning does not inflect expression in either of them. But I can forgive that as I chop onions or drive or are otherwise engaged. Both apps have a lot of features beyond just reading it aloud. Some justification perhaps for the high prices, and they’re subscription based, but I can’t see myself needing updates beyond better voices…
I just want an app that can accept documents, read them in a decent voice. Any recommendations from folks?
I think there was a post in the last 6 months on this, can’t find it now. Don’t recall what the solution was.
If the built-in or downloadable Apple voices are sufficient (doubtful given your description), you could consider Settings > Accessibility > Read & Speak > Accessibility Reader and/or Speak Selection.
Might require first that you open the desired document and select the text you want to hear, but there might be a shortcut/automation for that.
Just wanted to mention these quickly before I dash to other tasks…
The downloadable voices are pretty good. I just tried Siri Voice 4 and it’s much better than the default voices. There are a number of downloadable voices to choose from.
