Mirroring MacBook Pro to Apple TV fails

Hi friends, I’m attempting to mirror my M2 2023 MBP (MacOS 15.2) to my 4K AppleTV (TVos 18.2), but it’s failing. When I initially attempted the connection I was prompted enter the PIN that was displayed on the TV into my computer, which I did, but it never successfully displayed. Since then ever time I attempt the connection it fails. I’ve rebooted both devices but still get no love. Any hints or suggestions to resolve the issue?

Cheers!

This was mentioned in the recent post about OS updates. You might have to wait for a bug-fix from Apple.

There is a workaround:

Turn off the firewall in the MBP’s System Settings.

I had the same failure when I tried to mirror my MBP (2021 M1) to my 4K Apple TV (1st Gen—18.2) over Christmas. I also tried turning off the firewall, but it didn’t make a difference. I have been able to regularly mirror successfully in the past. This was the first time I tried since updating to Sequoia.

It seems that Sequoia has difficulty finding some devices on the local network. I couldn’t connect (see and mount in Finder) a Sequoia Mac to a Mojave Mac until I ran a 3rd party app that had previously connected. Maybe the same is happening with the Apple TV.

Some things to try:

a) connect the Mac and Apple TV using ethernet, not wifi (or vice versa!)

b) install a 3rd party Mac app that interacts with the Apple TV. For example Cider TV Ezzi Home - Product Information, Latest Updates, and Reviews 2024 | Product Hunt

Update: Mirroring my M2 Macbook Air running Sequoia is working so I cannot test those tips. I installed the CiderTV app out of curiosity but it was unable to connect to the ATV with Bluetooth so that might be a Sequoia limitation.

The problem is fixed in MacOS 15.3. I had turned off the firewall on the Mac (previous workaround). After installing the .3 software updates on both devices, I turned on the firewall on the Mac (System Settings>Network>Firewall), restarted both devices, and tried mirroring. It worked.
