Is Apple trying to nudge me off of iOS 18 and onto 26.1?

My iPhone (running iOS 18.7.2) just started alerting me to update “Now” or “Tonight” a day or two ago. I intend to stay on macOS 15.x and iOS 18.x for as long as possible. I do have macOS 26.1 installed in a VM, but at this point, the benefits of switching to Tahoe simply do not outweigh the interface/usability costs.

V26.2 are out now. No v18.7.3 for my old iPhone 12 mini since it can run iOS v26. I am going to wait a bit to be sure it is better. I don’t have time to deal with issues from it right now. Maybe during Christmas week.

That’s my plan too… wait a week or so to see if there’s any new wrinkles I need to be aware of on my 2022 iPhone SE.

I swear I got a notice to update my phone in the last week to 18.7.3 but I don’t see it this morning.

Now I have to check the iPad.

Nothing new for my M4 Mini

2021 13 Mini

V18.7.3 for which device? V18.7.3 and 26.2 came out yesterday after 10 AM PST in USA.

the 13 Mini - I must’ve been mistaken if it just came out. Thanks for the clarification!

Not true yet. I got the update notification on my Mini 5 and at first it appeared that iOS 26 was the only update offered. When I dismissed it, I was offered the option of 18.7.3. I hate the sneaky tactics.

I don’t see an option to dismiss the update now/tonight option in my iPhone 13 mini’s Software Update settings window, even after rebooting. The Apple Security Releases web page seems ambiguous on the subject of hardware compatibility with iOS/iPadOS 18.7.3:

iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 13-inch, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation and later, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 7th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later

Note that your 5th gen iPad mini is listed explicitly. It’s not clear to me that “iPhone XS and later” really means all iPhones later than the XS or just iPhone X* devices later than the XS that can’t run iOS 26.x.

Well, this isn’t exactly what the OP meant by nudging, but in my case I’d say it’s more like a big strong two-armed push rather than a nudge! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

In anticipation of a week-long hospital stay in a few weeks I picked up a pair of AirPods Pro 3, figuring the improved noise-cancelling capabilities would be useful. Discovered that trying to use them on iOS 18 is pretty much pointless as they only have “limited functionality” unless installed with an iPhone running iOS 26. They can operate as bluetooth connected earphones, some basic settings for noise cancellation are there, but very little is user-changeable. You can’t use Find My with them in iOS 18 and they tend to disconnect for no apparent reason. My few hours of experimentation were enough to convince me to move to iOS 26 this evening.

If you’re using an iPhone Xr or earlier that is unable to use iOS 26, save your money and don’t bother with the AirPods Pro 3.

I switched to 18.7.3 beta (same build number as public release) on my iPhone 16 Pro. No nags on beta channel.

I’m also blocking as much as possible in macOS 15.7.3 to prevent Tahoe. Using a bunch of configuration profiles to remove the red dot and some hosts file entries to prevent the update being listed. :face_with_steam_from_nose:

It is interesting that Apple appears to be holding back iOS 18.7.3 for more recent devices. I’m able to see it on my iPhone 13 mini if I switch to the beta release stream, but if I switch back to the final release channel, iOS 26.2 is the only visible option. Hopefully 18.7.3 will be released for newer devices in the next few days.

I am on 18.7.1 on the base model 2021 iPad and there is a 18.7.3 update option above iOS 26

Still only have 26 offered on the Mini 13

I’m not seeing iOS 18.7.3 offered on my iPhone SE (2020), currently running iOS 18.7.2 and I would not call it a more recent device. Perhaps Apple is engaging in some load-balancing strategy.

I was referring to iPhones more recent than the one explicitly named in the Apple Security Release webpage, i.e., the iPhone XS from 2018.

I wish it weren’t the case, but I am skeptical that demand for iOS 26 is so high that Apple is delaying release of 18.7.3 for some phones by multiple days.

I’d rather believe that they found a technical issue involving the models that don’t have 18.7.3 yet, but I confess that I think it more likely a “dark pattern” to encourage people to move to iOS 26, i.e., asking people to upgrade to iOS 26 now/tonight, rather than indicating that saying publicly that 18.7.3 is in the queue somewhere. I don’t trust Apple’s motives nearly as much as I once did.

I still don’t see v18.7.3 in my iPhone 12 mini’s iOS v18.7.2. Amusingly, my 64-bit W10 Pro’s iTunes says v18.7.2 is the latest when v26.2 is the latest. Also, no v18.7.3 there too. What the heck, Apple? I think I will delay my iOS upgrade again for now.

I have been running the latest build of 18.7.3 on my iPhone 13 mini for almost 2 weeks now with no even minor issues. And everything I’ve read from others who have tried that build have likewise been silent about finding any new bugs, so it’s obvious to me that Apple didn’t withhold public release of it due to last minute problems, but rather wants recent model users to move on to v26.2. I feel confident that you will never see v18.7.3 on your iPhone.

For those that really want 18.7.3 on all their devices. Last Public beta was same as final release.

Indeed, I don’t see it on my 13 Pro. But it shows up as the highlighted update on my iPad Pro M4, with 26.2 offered below.

I wonder if using public beta trick’s v18.7.3 is even supported by Apple and others. :/
