I’m wondering if nobody knows of an iPad app that solves this problem.
When Connie and I travel we have 3 cameras with 5 total memory cards that accumulate photos, shooting wildlife at 20 frames per second we can easily top 1,000 images per day. I need to be able to backup these easily with little on the road setup to a couple of external SSDs.
Currently doing this with macOS and CarbonCopyCloner with a series of predefined tasks each with its own source and a particular destination folder on the SSD. CCC does incremental backups skipping existing files at the destination since we don’t erase the cards on the road. Plug in the right card, run the appropriate job, eject, rinse, and repeat.
I would like to do this with my iPad Pro instead…but have found no app that will do what CCC does. Bombich does have CCC mobile and while it does incremental backups it doesn’t support predefined tasks which are vital to prevent idiot operator error at the end of a long day and he’s not interested in adding capabilities to the Mobile app as it didn’t sell well.
Searched pretty deeply and found nothing so I’m mostly resigned to just continuing to use the laptop but hoping somebody has discovered an app that will do so.
I tried to update my Wolverine Drive just for that type of project because I was loading SD Cards into my iPad and then syncing them to DropBox (over hotel WiFi). It didn’t work. I await input as I have not found an answer.
I don’t need this capability but am interested in options available. This webpage indicates there are SD to SSD adapters that can be used with an iPad Pro (or iPhone):
Hi, OP here. I had searched and searched on the App Store but as we ll know the search functions there re limited and basically you get to downloading and trying a bunch of apps that might be what you’re looking for.
So…I asked myself if AI could help and asked ChatGPT for an iPadOS app that supported multiple predefined tasks, supported external CRS readers and SSDs, and incremental copies. It came back with Sync and Ambertime but suggested Sync first as it matched everything I was looking for while Ambertime offered most of it. I downloaded both and after using the free modes will try paying for a year of Sync at 14 bucks and see how it works in practice.
When travelling it was my iPhone that I am more likely to lose or have stolen. Losing the photos is a primary concern. So I have experimented with various apps, backup services and devices. Having had a bad experience with iCloud, that is not an option and other backup services have various shortcomings. So now I use a Sandisk stick and use the Sandisk app to copy the day’s iPhone shots and make sure the stick is stored in the hotel safe. Simple but it works.
This won’t satisfy professional photogs, but if you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber their photos app provides unlimited cloud backup at no extra charge. (Video backup is not unlimited)
