I’m using macOS 15.2 on an M3 MacBook Air. I’ve been wondering what’s up with drag and drop: I can no longer drag files from the desktop to folders, and I found last night that I can no longer drag images into Acorn with a mouse or with the trackpad. I’m not sure when these problems started.
I found a temporary fix from the developer of Yoink: quitting the ScopedBookmarkAgent process in the Activity Monitor:
Strange. On an M2 MacBook Air I have no trouble dragging items from the desktop to the Finder on 15.2. (I don’t have Acorn so I can’t comment on that, but I can drag image files items from the desktop to the Photos app.)
According to that post (issued before MacOS 15.1 was released), the issue was supposed to be fixed in MacOS 15.1.
I am running MacOS 15.2 and don’t see the problem. I was able to drag files from the desktop into a folder, and when I dragged an image from the desktop to the Acorn icon in the dock (after opening Acorn), the image loaded.
I’m beginning to feel like the boy who cried wolf. But it was a real problem last night — not just with Acorn but also with Pages and TextEdit (impossible to drop an image into either).
Now ScopedBookmarkAgent is running again, but I can still drag and drop with no problems.
Well, you are not crazy. I am seeing it here with 15.3. It comes and goes. But I don’t really have time to run it down now. Sequoia was already unacceptably broken for my purposes.
I’m dragging images from Photos into sub-folders in a larger project folder.
I have the sub-folders in in list format and alphabetical order.
Previously when my cursor reached the destination sub-folder, the folder; line would light up and the image would drop into that folder. Sometimes the folder might be open with images already in.
Last moth while I was working, trying to beat a deadline. the target folders stopped lighting up as the cursor hit them. Sometime the image would drop into the folder but more often it would go into the mother folder. On locating it and dragging to the sub-folder then the folder would light up.
I’ve been working this way for years and have never seen this behaviour before. Even if I go very slowly and very precise would my mousing it still happens.
However…
as is normal, today it’s working as it should!

No.
As far as I am concerned, macOS has been unusably broken since Ventura before this bug. The drag-and-drop behavior is clearly inconsistent enough that it would have required a lot of work to narrow down. Apple appears to have better things to do than fix bugs I have spent DAYS testing with EVERY update since Ventura shipped trying to narrow down the behavior for them. I could give a damn about this one.
If Apple’s hearing assistance hadn’t shown so much promise my broken iPhone 12 mini would have been replaced with a “dumb” phone.
I had it come up again last night. This time I could drag and drop files in the Finder, but I couldn’t drag images into apps. I quit the ScopedBookmarkAgent process, which didn’t help. So I restarted, and everything worked. I have no idea what might have caused the problem to come up again.
This is madding at times, when I just trying to move a few files off the Desktop into another folder. It seems to me that the Finder has lost it’s focus…
My work around is to open another folder on my Desktop - close it, click on the desktop - release & then drag select over the files and move them like normal…
No idea why this works.
I’m seeing something like what you describe. It happens when I drag from a browser (I’ve been using Safari and Brave) to Devonthink Pro. The first time I drag something, it works. But usually by the second or third attempt, dragging becomes so slow it just about stops midway.
