Good advice, Jim. That system has the benefit of making it easy to sort and find specific dates (assuming you use YEAR.Month.Day and always have a leading zero for single-digit month or day values. I have used similar naming for important projects. Just out of curiosity, do you have a pro/con rationale for using dots vs hyphens as separators?

While contracting at a VFX house we were required to use a very specific file naming structure that also included the shot#, take#, frame# and other variables on the master scanned frames. If we edited ONE single pixel of ONE frame in a shot, a script would output a new copy of that shot with +1 to the revision#.

I did not envy the data wranglers at that studio whos job it was to backup all that media every day.
