Car Play, WhatsApp and iMessage. Problem and solution

I use Siri (I know, I know) to read out my WhatsApp and iMessages then reply in Car Play. It worked very well until it didn’t. On the last two journeys Siri told me I didn’t have either app on my iPhone.
This was the cause I’ve since discovered. With ios18 I’d set many apps with personal info to additionally require Face ID. This included WhatsApp and iMessage. It seems this renders the apps invisible to Siri in Car Play. Take off ‘require face ID’ and they work again.

In iOS 18 with CarPlay, when I ask Siri to read my last text message, it replies “You’ll have to unlock your iPhone first.” But I cannot find any setting to toggle ‘require face ID’ in Messages. Where did you find it?!

And Siri on my HomePod recognizes my voice (well, usually) and addresses me by name; why can’t iOS do that?!

I set ‘Use Face ID’ on my iPhone apps by pressing and holding the app icon for a few seconds then selecting the command on the pop up box. I turn if off the same way this time selecting, of course, ‘do not use Face ID.’ My iPhone connects automatically to Car Play when I start the car and tap the icon on the infotainment screen. I can then tell Siri to read out my messages, play music etc without needing to unlock the phone. Has your iPhone somehow become disconnected from the car?
