Can't talk to CarPlay anymore?

While we’re on the subject, I have a quick question for those people using CarPlay. I have a Toyota 2019 and I have used CarPlay via a USB plug for many years. A few months ago I’m able to use it but I’m not able to do any vocal commands with it and use it without picking up the phone and unplugging it. I was wondering if there was a setting that somehow got changed during an update but I recently swapped out for a new cable, thinking that may be the problem, but that does not solve the problem so I’m back to square one. There’s nothing on the car to seemed to change and I can’t figure out what the problem is that it’s not letting me access the phone via the cars microphones.

My (very general) suggestion would be to delete any existing CarPlay profiles in your Toyota’s audio head unit (there should be one for each phone you connect), disable Bluetooth on the head unit, and then plug iPhone in to the car.

While my experience is with Honda OEM hardware (same year as your Toyota), I’ve found that:

  • a new iPhone requires a new profile on the car side, so you sometimes have two or more profiles all named the same thing but only one of them relates to the unique phone you have plugged in
  • Bluetooth overrides a hardwired CarPlay connection. If it was accidentally enabled by another user, that would account for the behavior you are seeing. If you want to use iPhone over USB, which I prefer both for the solid connection and the built-in recharging, you have to disable Bluetooth on the car’s head unit.

Hope this helps!
