I agree that VueScan and SilverFast both are superior to the basic functionality exposed via most ICA drivers.
By “worst case,” I was referring to the expense of a commercial driver. I had the impression that the original poster had been satisfied with his pre-Tahoe driver, which almost certainly was a Brother ICA driver.
The Brother ICA driver for Catalina largely met my needs.
There’s no need to purchase Silverfast or Vuescan for day to day scanning. The supplied software should suffice for most use cases.
If you’re scanning negatives or other more demanding requirements that’s another conversation.
A very different conversation since I would also need to buy a new scanner.
