Even here where electric rates are offensive, I end up paying gross (generation, distribution, taxes, shenanigans, etc.) no more than 40¢ per kWh. If we assume that a modern Mac (just the circuitry, not the display) when idle goes through no more than 10 W (and thatâs quite generous), thatâs about 7 kWh/month if youâd leave it running that way 24/7 without interruption or ever doing any real work. So even with my vulgar PG&E rates (including their recent âbase services chargeâ BS), that would amount to less than $3/month.
Iâm no fan of most utilities, no matter their form of ownershipâpublic or privateâbut donât forget in California, areas with a âpublic powerâ provider force their non-government run counterparts to match their often higher rates through a âprovider indifference chargeâ. In other words, even if a regional utility can generate and buy electricity at a lower cost than a single city utility, the regional utility is forced to charge customers the same rate as the single city utility.
