Voice Memo and AirPods have scratchy playback

My Air Pods Pro work fine when listening to music, podcasts, etc. When using my Air Pods if I pause to record a Voice Memo the playback is scratchy and mostly unlistenable. Why does Apple Voice Memo not work with my Air Pods? The playback is scratchy whether play back is using the Air Pods or the iPhone speaker.

Could there be a problem with the AirPods microphone such that it’s recording sound that’s scratchy and then playing it back flawlessly? If you call some using the AirPods Pro as the mic, do they notice any scratchiness? I’m trying to think of other apps that could be used to test this—I’m sure there are some.

Thanks. I needed to clean the microphone. I had not needed to do that previously.

I’ll share a related problem I ran into a couple of months ago, even though it obviously doesn’t apply to your situation.. Sometimes dust and other debris can accumulate even in very tiny speaker grilles, like those on a MacBook Air. This debris can have a surprisingly large impact on audio quality.

I had always been impressed with my MacBook Air’s sound quality, but recently I noticed an ugly buzzing noise coming out of the speakers when playing anything above low volume. I was worried that something went wrong with an OS update or maybe that the hardware was failing. A quick search of different support forums suggested all sorts of potentially dire problems that could be expensive to fix. As it turned out, a quick, gentle treatment of the MBA’s surface with an old toothbrush solved the problem. Compressed air probably would have worked, too, but I didn’t have any handy.
