The Apple tax

Today (10-29-27) on the WSJ, a great article about the history of the fraught relationship between flash memory providers and Apple. The AI boom has finally given memory providers the upper hand after decades, at least for now.

Here’s an interesting quote, in case you ever doubted the notion of the “Apple tax” when trying to upgrade your RAM or storage capabilities from the often underwhelming baseline configuration:

Apple recorded an average gross profit of more than 80 cents for every dollar it charged iPhone and iPad buyers for extra storage since it first released those devices through 2025, the Journal found. For Mac computers sold since 2010, it averaged nearly 80 cents.

Does the WSJ story provide any figures for other manufacturers? It’s hard to say if Apple is “taxing” its customers without some context.
