Save iPhone Marked up images as JPG not HEIC possible?

I just noticed this happening recently, thought in past they were saved as jpgs. (ios 26.2; haven’t looked on iPads or Mac).

All Camera and Photos App settings are for Compatibility not Efficiency. There doesn’t seem to be anywhere to set the file format for Photos that have been marked up. Is there another Setting somewhere I’m overlooking? I searched Settings App for Markup and HEIC and there were no results. Compatibilty as a search word let to wifi settings and screen capture settings.

Quick online search only found descriptions of how to use Markup.

In my iPhone, with iOS 26.2, the setting is inside the camera app settings, there is a section called formats and then you can setup if you want compatible or high efficiency for the HEIC format.

Thanks @Ed68 , I’ve had that set to Most Compatible ever since HEIC came out. Still, images that I’ve marked up are now .heic files.

I’ve found the easiest way to save updated photos to .jpg is to just use the ‘Save As’ command.

Thanks @opiecook , where in iOS Photos App do you find ‘save as’? I did a tap and hold and it was not among the options, though saving to Files was an option which might have included the format change, and Sharing Options included ‘Most Compatible’ as a format.

I am hoping for some overall setting vs. having to go thru multiple steps everytime I markup a photo, which could be a dozen or more at a time…
