The hub arrived yesterday (two weeks instead of one). After 24 hours, no ejecting the volume, so hopefully this is the solution.

That’s promising. Note that some powered USB hubs have individual switches for each port so you can disconnect drives (after ejecting them) without needing to unplug them. Saves wear and tear on cables.
As mentioned in another discussion I have found Tekera powered hubs work well. My Macbook Air uses a Tekera hub that includes an ethernet socket, which is useful in my home-office. I have an SSD, powered hard drive and Bluray drive plugged into the hub and switch them on when needed.

I have a couple of Acasis hubs with power switches for each USB port. I like that feature a lot. I also have a couple of older Plugable hubs that have an on/off switch for the whole hub. Both options come in handy.
More than a week after installing the hub, zero disconnects, so I’m confident that the problem was insufficient power being supplied by the iMac.
