Junk Mail

Earthlink also does this. Their spam info page indicates that they block “Known Spam” from being delivered. Their next level, “Suspected Spam” is user configurable to have it delivered to your spam folder or your Inbox.

Yes – they have periodically blocked TidBITS, so I switched my TidBITS address to gmail. Recently they were also blocking groups.io and I made the same switch for that.

SpamSieve would be the perfect solution if it worked on junk mail the same way it worked on the inbox but it doesn’t. It has to be done by opening the junk mailbox, doing a select all, then using the SpamSieve menu bar to do a manual filtering. It does not automatically filter the junk mailbox or at least I have not found a way to do it and SpamSieve support has been no help so far in resolving this.

The triggering issue is Apple as when the mail reaches iCloud before being downloaded to Apple Mail, iCloud filters it through its server junk mail filter first. This means that some emails are assigned to junk mail before Apple Mail receives them. Unfortunately, there are no settings in iCloud to disable the server iCloud junk mail filter so emails can appear in the Apple Mail junk folder even though it is disabled in Apple Mail settings. Since SpamSieve does not automatically filter the junk mail folder they remain there until SpamSieve filtering is triggered by the user on the junk mail folder.

Currently I know of no workaround for this issue. However, if anyone else has a solution, I would love to hear it.

The satellite internet providers are getting very competitive on pricing for fast service. Time to switch?

Apple is now putting a lot of legitimate email into the junk folder. For example, my Washington Post newsletters are going into junk. All the LinkedIn emails go to junk (though most really are junk!). I have to carefully check junk now to find these legitimate emails.

Same here, although sometimes I don’t know if it’s Apple Mail or Spectrum.

If you use (and you should) SpamSieve, this AppleScript works well to solve this problem:

Junk mail has increased incredibly this year. I am getting multiples of the same ones, one after another, mostly overnight. I realize I’m still on an old Mac OS but I’ve started marking some of the more frequent ones Junk on my phone and they are still coming through.

Am I going to have to finally buy a separate spam catcher?

I have 365 spams in my Comcast junk folder since Dec 6 and there were quite a few I’d outright deleted - so I wouldn’t be surprised if there were 400+

My experience is that Apple Mail catches all of the real Junk mail and puts it in the Junk Mail folder. The problem is that some non-junk is also going in. I review the junk mail folder every day and flag the “not junk” email (doesn’t seem to help Apple Mail be more accurate). Doing this daily is not a huge hassle. Periodically Apple seems to black list the mail servers that send out the junk, but that only lasts a couple of days as the spam merchants move to a new mail server. In this season with increased junk mail Apple hasn’t been as aggressive about shutting them down. Maybe the engineers are on Christmas vacation!

I have very few false positives in my Junk folder. I can’t seem to get the phone or the computer to learn what the newer spam is.

Update. I was pleased that the volume of junk email had decreased significantly after Christmas, and that lasted through most of January, But starting last week, the volume of Junk increased by a factor of 10 - and the high volume has continued. It’s like Apple just turned off their Junk filter. Another bit of inscrutable Apple behavior. It is still putting some of my LinkedIn, NYT and WaPo newsletters into Junk, and “Not Junk” has no effect. Consistency would be nice…
