I haven’t found any situations where I wanted to go back in my Messages farther than a year. If it’s important to me (which rarely happens), I take screen shots or just copy the text and paste it into a separate text document.
To keep the storage space used down I occasionally use my iPhone to delete pictures/videos from my Messages after I have saved them to my Photos. On my iOS18.5 iPhone I go to: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages (you might have to tap ‘Show All’ to see Messages) > Review Large Attachments. Here I can swipe left individually or tap ‘Edit’ to select multiples then tap the trash can.
