Home Router Selection

Yes it was, I very much loved it and was disappointed when we had to let it go.

Thank you

Seems like you were pretty comfortable with Asus and TP-Link.

What factor(s) flipped your decision to Ubiquity?

I missed this thread, but let me add to the chorus of people who REALLY LOVED IPNetRouter. Not only did it work well, but I learned a lot about network management and firewalls, etc, by configuring and monitoring it.

If Apple were to bring back its networking hardware (which they should, given Cook’s policy of ‘control the major parts of the stack’,) they should install IPNetRouter-like functionality into a new-and-improved AirPort.

I had to upgrade my mesh from what my isp provider gave me as I wasn’t getting the coverage I needed. I tried T-P Link and it was awful. I then went with EERO 7 and it’s fantastic, but expensive.

Nobody seems to have mentioned Mercku? I bought the oriiginal on kickstarter eons ago and after software/firmware teething problems it has been rock solid for a number of years. My system had 3 bees (overkill) and the last one died recently (I assume a power supply failure) though the main M2s are still working perfectly. The new M6s AX3000 Mesh Router – Mercku Wi-Fi looks good though I’m only on an HFC 250/100 plan and my old Mercku handles that with ease. I have a few 2.4GhZ iOT devices one of which is a tad remote and would be happier with a stronger 2.4 signal (they are separated). The only annoyance, and I assume that would be with just about any router is the issue of band steering. It drives me batty that a device which is close to one node connects to a further node and even if I power it off and on, it still does that. My backhaul is wired between the two Mercku M2s.

Well… my Black Friday shopping will likely include a mesh WiFi 7 system. Finally Fiber has arrived and we will be connected at 5Gb in a week or so. Given the layout and structure of our house and studio we will need a base with two satellites, one of which will be wired to the base. My work Mac and our main ATV will be via Ethernet but a lot of devices via WiFi especially when the kids all land home.
We had an Orbi system before which worked very well out of the box but bafflingly was difficult to configure. So less inclined to pick up a Netgear replacement.
Considering a TP Link Deco 67 3-pack or a Ubiquiti Dream Router 7 + 2× UniFi Express 7 which seems like it might be tricky to set up. Anyone with experience of either?

I purchased a Dream router 7 and 2 Express 7’s about a month ago. Express 7’s using wired backhaul, they can also be setup as wireless mesh. Everything works great, no issues so far. Still exploring all of the features and where everything is located in Unifi OS. One thing I did learn the best way to do the initial setup was through the App on my iPhone.

We had Orbi…but they broke the ability to update them 2 years back and even the supposed fix (factory reset) only worked sometimes. Upgraded to the Ubiquity Dream and the Express and they were easy peasey setup and have been working great for…6 months or so I guess. Highly recommend. Looked at the TP Links as well but decided non Chinese made was better…maybe they’re compromised by their government, maybe not but with a well known US made lterntive it seemed a no brainer. I’m happy with the Ubiquity gear.

I’ve been very happy with my Eero units. All are hardwired together as are most of my devices in fixed locations such as TVs, desktops, and printers. I get my full gigabit speed on my iMac and Apple TVs.

Thanks all. Fibre arrived yesterday. I’ve some rewiring of Cat6 to do given need to have the ONT (Hauwei) coming off an external wall but so far all looks promising. I ordered a 5Gb account… let’s see what actually delivers over time.

Connecting to the new router directly (Sagemcom, all Chinese kit supplied by our local provider)…

  • WiFi 7 enabled iPhone, 1500Mbs down, 260Mbs up.
  • Ethernet connected (cat6, 10g port) to MBPro, 1000Mbs down, 250Mbs up.
  • WiFi on same Mac, 500Mbs down, 250Mbs up

If I hook our existing Orbi mesh WiFi to the 10G port (an RB50+3 satellites)…

  • Wifi on both iPhone and MBPro - 400Mbs down/ 250 Mbs up.

All of which is extraordinary to us, given our top speed until yesterday was about 30Mbs down, 10Mbs up. Which we made work, iffy at times when both of us were teaching online at the same time and something decided it was time to sync with the cloud.

In time for Christmas when our expanded family (a happy marriage this year for our eldest) arrives home for a week or two. I could have used it during the covid lockdown, when all were here, all working online from animation production to PhD research to our youngest, a daughter in senior year applying to colleges across the states and Ireland. Mayhem at times.

I’m holding off picking up a new mesh for a while, let’s see what equipment can use WiFi 7 beyond my iPhone, my MBPro is always wired in, and other uses are low in general. Good to see what our actual real world needs are.
