For the past year or so, I have been using Duckduckgo more and more. A month or two ago, my Intego virus scan quarantined 2 files 7 or 8 levels deep in one of the Library directories with the notation Trojan horse. They seemed to be associated woth DDG I wasn’t sure what to do next, so I just continued on my merry way. A few days ago, returning from a road trip, I started up my Mac mini and noticed a message to update DDG from the App Store. I did so. DDG would appear on the cmd-tab listing but would not be visible. I forced quit and tried again. After throwing mud on the wall a couple of times with no luck, I trashed the two quarantined files (but stupidly did not copy the links) thinking might be hindering the update. Still no luck. I assume I need to get into the weeds and find anything that says DDG and trash it. Any suggestions?
If I were facing a similar situation, I probably would go to the DDG website using Safari, download the DDG installer, turn off my virus protection, and then run the installer. Next, I would launch DDG and leave the virus protection off until I felt confident DDG was running normally.
If that didn’t work, I would use my Time Machine backups to restore the previous DDG installation, beginning with just the application and only restoring Library files if necessary.
My last fallback would be to use my once-weekly Carbon Copy Cloner backup to restore DDG and its associated support files.
ETA: DDG relies on components of Apple’s WebKit infrastructure. So it is important to ensure macOS and Safari are kept up to date on any device running DDG.
Did what you suggested & everything is OK. Thanks.
