Or is it just me? At first, I thought it was my old 12 mini but I also have the same problem in my new 17. I can tell because my iPhone gets hot in my pant pocket for leaving its camera on. :(
Perhaps you are touching the camera shortcut button (on bottom right of lock screen) as you are putting the iPhone in your pocket to activate the camera?

I was the same with torch, so I simply removed the button from my lock screen. Possible since iOS 18.
Using this method you can still swipe from the edge to go into camera. Which would at least allow you to narrow down the cause.
