Authentication app for the Mac that can import a JSON file

Hi!. I need an authentication app for my M2 MBP that can import a json file. I would prefer it to be a barebones one that is not a subscription, prefer free or cheap,. Will consider a one time purchase also. I was using BitWarden’s iPad Authenticator app as it worked on the MBP but now it does not and the developer has no intention to fix it. I look at the thread but it has been a while since it has been updated sooooo I am asking. I use BW Authenticator on my iPhone. I also use BW to manage my passwords. Suggestions? Thanks for the help Lee

Found One!!! Proton Authentication app, available in the App store for the iPad but works superbly on my MBP running 15.7.3

That would be BBEdit

I have tried Proton Authentication app twice and both times it has failed. Proton can not give me a reason to why and now want as per their email this morning:

Can you please provide us with more information about the issue you are experiencing?

Would you be able to share the exact steps you took when you experienced this issue?

Could you tell me what type of device you’re using, including the OS of the device as well?

Can you try and uninstall and reinstall the application to see if the issue persists?

If you are able to reproduce this behavior consistently, can you please provide us with a short screen recording of the exact steps that you are taking and the behavior that you are experiencing so that we can get a better understanding of the issue? Please keep in mind that our ticketing system does not accept files that are larger than 50 MB. If your file is larger, please upload it to a cloud storage service and send us the link.

Guess it back to looking for a as **LALicata said “**prefer free or cheap” one.

Like a dummy, I had installed the Proton Authentication app on my Mac as well as iPhone. The app doesn’t work on a Mac.

I use to use the Authentication app from the App Store from 2Stable and didn’t mind forking over 20 bucks a year for it but they increased their price by almost 100% to $39.99 so I deleted the app.

hello all. I have Proton’s Authentication app on my MBP and have imported the JSON file from Bitwarden into it. It appears to be working as designed, although the human interface could use a lot of work. I am also using Proton VPN, Mail, and their Drive. What has my concern is that I appear to be migrating to putting all of my “eggs” into one basket, and tying my horse to Proton AG. At this time, the cost is manageable but if they raise their prices to something northward, then I am stuck. But as we speak, I have searched for and have not found any other standalone Authentication app that will work on my MBP. Bitwarden’s iPad app use to work on the MBP but now no longer works, and BW will NOT explain why they broke it. I do keep AUTHY running also just in case but when they pulled their desktop app, I became disillusioned. Eventually I will probably get 2 or more YubiKey 5C NFC keys and kick all 2FA apps to the curb.

I use the app OTP Authenticator by Roland Moers on my iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. I don’t need it on my Mac, but they also have a version in the Mac App Store (I think for $5.99 one-time payment.)

It works great for me on those devices, and uses end to end encryption to sync between devices using iCloud sync, plus has an option to use biometrics or a passcode in order to unlock the app on launch.
