Thoughts on Proton Pass sought

As 1Password is killing off local stand-alone vaults/sync ( 1Password 7 Crash on Launch under iOS 27 - #14 by Gobit ) which are the reason I stayed on 1PW 7) and nobody seems to provide similar, I’m reluctantly going to have to go with a cloud-based manager. I’ve narrowed my options to:

  • 1Password 8
  • Proton Pass

I’m leaning towards Proton Pass. Is anyone here using it or other Proton apps? Does anyone else have views on Proton?

Thanks.

Is Proton Pass subscription or standalone? Subscription is a deal killer for me.

There’s a free version and a subscription option. Go to Proton Pricing Plans - Free & Paid Plans | Proton and then select Pass for the comparison

You could try Enpass that supports local vaults and wifi syncing.

KeePass XC is also there, in the open source realm. I use it on my Mac and Linux laptops and KeePassium on iPhone to read the database KPXC creates.

I used Proton VPN for a while, like plenty of other TBTers, but changed for customer support reasons soon after, so never tried their other products.

Current user of Proton products. I quite like Proton Pass but it is oddly limited to Safari for browser integration. That said, It looks good and it’s responsive and efficient. If you use other browsers you might be better off with Enpass.

Free versions of BitWarden and Proton Pass aren’t bad, but if you want to attach documents or keep secure notes you have to purchase them. I do use Proton VPN and find it fine.
Since 1PW’s price increase I have tried BitWarden and Proton Pass, bought BitWarden, but decided in the end to use a combination of Apple’s Passwords and Uplock (which is a subscription, but adds all the things 1PW used to do that Passwords does not).

If you want to be fully offline, PasswordWallet from Selznick might still be an option for you (albeit I haven’t used it in 27). There were no updates for quite a while, but it has all functionality that is needed. One-time payment.

My bride still uses that but sync is non automatic and problematic for a long time. The dev is a one man shop and has moved onto other things besides updating the app. He has essentially moved on to another interest. In addition to the backup and sync issues the auto fill username and password process doesn’t exist and the copy paste process is cumbersome and IMO useless.

Before 1PW solved the no local backup ability I did pretty extensive evaluations and found zero options that do everything I use in 1PW…DropBox support, UTO sync, attachments of multiple types to records, formatted secure notes, local backups etc.

Every other option provides some of those but none provide all of them. I’m still using 1PW v7 but will reluctantly go to v8 if/when v7 doesn’t work any longer. Maybe Apple Passwords will grow into it. I could use the Secure Note option in Notes of if I could figure out how secure it actually is.

If one needs 2-way sync between iphone and computer, PasswordWallet is indeed awkward. It is not an issue for me since I do it only 1-way only. My wallet file on the computer is a vault with various private info, way over 1000 entries, and I don’t want all of them on my phone, so I transfer only a subset that I want to have on the phone. One-way sync has to be done manually, but it takes just seconds. However, if the usage of password app is primarily for online passwords, then indeed PasswordWallet is not a good option for most. I brought it up because OP wished local storage.

PasswordBoss used to have local storage, but since they moved to an webapp on the computer recently, all is in cloud.

KeyShade is a lightweight password manager which stores locally. It is free for local-only use. One has to pay if sync between computer and phone is desired. Sync runs automatically.

Interesting, as I am using PP extension in Firefox for a few years now.

Thanks. I’d love that. I must have missed a beat.

Proton Pass also has an extension for Chrome-based browsers including Brave and Vivaldi. Not DuckDuckGo, however.

I’ve been using PasswordWallet for years (Mac, iPhone, iPad) and it still works fine on OS 27. Also, the ‘Get Info’ panel for the app says it’s Universal, so it should work fine when OS 28 comes along.
