What Australians flying to the US need to know about phone and device searches at the border

That’s quite extraordinary. There is zero chance I’d travel to the States any time soon but given the current climate these powers would have me rethinking if I was. Given how much personal information is stored on phones these days I’d think anyone would be alarmed at the extent of these powers.

On my recent travels I’ve been surprised how easy it’s been passing through customs and immigration thoughout Europe and Japan.

Unfortunately, the essentially absolute power over travelers held by border guards and customs officials is the case worldwide. But as the article says, at least cloud services—along with VPNs—make sanitizing phones and laptops before entering and exiting countries possible. Once you’re in-country, though, managing security and privacy can be an entirely different matter…

And a tip: if you’ve ever departed from TLV and still have the yellow sticker on your passport, remove it. Airline and airport security workers can see the risk level TLV has assigned to you in the number on the sticker. Plus alerting immigration control officers that you’ve visited TLV’s country can lead to all sorts of problems.
