WARNING! Backblaze now ignoring Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud Drive, etc

Thanks. so left hand really doesn’t know what right hand is doing at Backblaze!

Wow! My wife and I are big Dropbox users on three computers with two Backblaze accounts. Somehow I missed this thread. Ouch.

+1. I’m running BB 9.2.2 on a 2018 MacMini with Sequoia with Desktop&Documents sync turned on to keep it synced with my laptop, but with Optimize turned off.

While I haven’t done an exhaustive cross check, Backblaze appears to be backing up all the files synced via iCloud and stored in Documents or the Desktop. Certainly all the files I created in the last week are showing up when I log into BB online.

Not sure if I should force BB to upgrade to v.10 or not, under the “if it ain’t broke” don’t fix it theory.

I did realize that I already back up this computer to an external drive with Carbon Copy Cloner so if BB really isn’t working with iCloud for me in the future, it should be pretty easy to switch to Adam’s method of backing up files to a non-iCloud location and directing BB to backup that external drive.

I asked BB Support how this sentence in the long reply I had earlier:

“We’ve made targeted investments where we can, for example, adding support for iCloud Drive by working within Apple’s model and supporting Google Drive, but extending that same level of support to other providers like Dropbox or OneDrive is more complex and not included in the current version.”

…reconciled with the statements I had received earlier, and BB Support Document which clearly said iCloud Drive not supported.

The answer I have just received was:

"Essentially, the “adding support” statement is more or less re-adding support. In a previous update, it was removed due to the back-and-forth song and dance Backblaze has had to do to be able to back up these directories (while stored locally) amidst constant updates of iCloud’s software. Simplifying it to ignore these other cloud-based services was the choice.

Based on feedback, it was re-enabled for iCloud specifically. I believe that article hasn’t quite been updated yet, based on how recent the change was while the back-end teams find a more concrete stance and solution moving forward.

So currently, if iCloud files are stored locally, the newer Backblaze versions should continue to back them up as they did previous."

This is a complete U turn from the initial reply to my simple question about whether iCloud Drive was backed up, and is consistent with the experiences being reported by Adam and others. If I had received this answer initially I would not have cancelled my account.
