USB 3 and Thunderbolt

Something I’m not clear about.
Is it ok to connect a USB 3 external drive into a Thunderbolt port?
Or is a dock required?

Absolutely yes, you can plug a USB drive into a Thunderbolt port. The carbon copy cloner disk backup for my M2 MacBook is a USB-C / USB 3 drive.
