Upgraded from Tahoe to Golden Gate 27.01 - love the background, fixed a hand-off problem

But note also that SSD controllers generally keep some storage in reserve. So when you buy a 1TB SSD, there may actually be 1.1TB of flash memory on the module, in order to provide spare blocks (when some go bad) and as buffering space during garbage collection.

One of the differences between consumer and enterprise SSDs is that the enterprise models usually have more reserve storage (in addition to other features).

I’d really like to clear out some space. I know that over 1 TB is my Photos library. I originally got a 2 TB MBP M1 because I have a lot of photos going back decades and I didn’t just want them in the cloud.

It seemed I did have at least 500 GB free though until somehow usage creeped up.

Now I’m using 1.76 TB and have just 240 GB of free space. I’ve cleared out old caches and whatnot. I’ll look around for more.

I paused CCC for the moment, reformatted my Time Machine drive (which I do every couple of years) and am getting fresh Time Machine backups.

I also have 2 TB of iCloud storage which is a little over half used. And a BackBlaze backup also.

Things just seem periodically slow though. Like Mail on my Mac gets stuck and I have to force quit it and restart.

And hand-off (e.g. copy paste between my iPhone and Mac) is often not working lately.
