Turn off _hosting_ screen mirroring on a Macbook

I’m guessing this is either super simple (and I just haven’t figured out the correct terminology to bring it up) or doesn’t exist. I haven’t been able to find anything related after exhausting my ideas for search terms on TidBITS and Google.

In my classroom each day, I present a short slideshow to students. I have an AppleTV connected to my projector, which is where I screen mirror my iphone to present the slides. My Macbook also shows up on the list of screen mirror hosts. I never want to mirror my phone to my screen and can’t imagine a scenario in which I might want to do that. However, because the screen mirror hosts list frequently updates as I’m about to click the projector/AppleTV, I sometimes end up hitting the Macbook entry instead.

I went looking for a way to turn off the screen mirror hosting on the Macbook, but haven’t been able to find anything. I’m running Sonoma 14.6.1.

Turn off AirPlay Receiver in Sharing settings?

Speaking of those settings in Sharing, what is actually the difference there between “Screen Sharing” and “Remote Management”? Both seem to offer preferences for VNC and remote desktop (and neither is ssh — that’s in Remote Login). The latter obviously goes beyond screen sharing, but it also replicates some of those prefs. I thought Apple used to follow this paradigm about not replicating controls in several different locations.

Screen Sharing is a simple VNC, Remote Management is for Apple Remote Desktop which does way more than just screen sharing.

Specifics? References?

Instant fix, thank you Very much! I’m going to include a detailed description here in hopes that it makes this information easier for someone else like me to find, who didn’t know which Apple terminology to search on:

On my Settings (Sonoma, 14.6.1), in General → Sharing I don’t have an “AirPlay Receiver” option. After a google search, I found that it’s located inside General → Airdrop & Handoff, a location that I wouldn’t have look at for this otherwise. Why Apple doesn’t categorize this as “Sharing” is a mystery to me.

Turning off the AirPlay Receiver option there immediately removed the laptop from my iphone’s list of screen share recipients, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

Sure, by why are VNC settings replicated in both? That used to be a no-no.

Remote Management is based on VNC, but also enables support for other services that go beyond what VNC supports (e.g. remote installation of software), and is accessible via the Remote Desktop app.

If you enable screen sharing, but not Remote Management, then you’ll only get the VNC-compatible capabilities.

Similarly, if you enable Remote Management, you can connect via a VNC client, but you’ll only get the VNC-compatible capabilties.
