Anyone else seeing this and have suggestions?: install the NordVPN App (current and earlier versions) on iPados 26.1 (and earlier) and try to login… something like a browser window (maybe part of the App) opens, a shortened url at the top changes, progress bar at the top and… a blank window.
Clicking on the Browser symbol upper right, a browser window (sometimes; sometimes also blank) opens and offers to login, I enter proper, double checked credentials and… it won’t log in ‘Something went wrong’ and only a Cancel option.
I’ve tried changing default browsers, turning off all the usual protections, and not Firefox, Orion or Safari will successfully log in from the browser button in the NordVPN App. One time I got a warning that JavaScript was deactivated somewhere and searched iPad Settings for it and there were no results. Looked in Safari Settings and there is an on/off for JavaScript, which is on. Maybe somewhere is another setting for JavaScript conflicting with this. Dunno if that setting in Safari controls for the other browsers but as I think I read they all use Safaris ‘engine’ and presumably its settings.
Went back and forth with their ‘support’ and they don’t seem to grasp what I’m saying or that it’s only on iPad. Tried all their suggestions and some don’t exist on iPad and none have changed the result. The lastest suggestion is that I should reset my network settings. I can go with any of the browsers direct to my NordVPN account and login with iPad. Just not with their App, which is apparently the only way to use it. (I asked for the details of settings to enter myself in VPN configurations in Settings but that question was ignored).
Their app I’ve successfully installed and logged in on two Mac laptops and four iPhones in various OSes and App versions. Just the iPads are a problem.
Not sure what could be interfering. I also have Firefox Klar installed (use rarely), the previous VPN supplier’s App installed (but removed from VPN Settings; also true of iPhone, which works). And I do tend use tracking protections and so on, and would think the App provider would know what trackers and blockers their login process depends on and advise users to at least temporarily change settings…
I haven’t tried it, may be worth a whirl in case it shakes some digits into place. As the main app won’t let me log in to even use the vpn in the first place it might be unlikely. I’m not much of a widget user so hadn’t occurred to me!
I tried the Widget, all it did was launch the same app that led to the same blank login screen.
Somewhere along the way I saw a reference to JavaScript, found it on in Safari (IIRC) Settings. I also use Orion and 2 Firefoxes on iPad. Orion has a ‘saver’ setting (bandwidth I think) that makes a vague reference to features it turns off, including “scripts” so I turned that off.
So I deleted all browser apps except Safari, changed Safari to be default, updated to 26.2, combed through every setting, and… of course it still doesn’t work. I make a bit more progress now but there is still an error after entering username/password.
I signed up for Nord about a year ago and it works nicely on Mac and iPhone in os 26. Only on the iPads is it not working.
Might be time for the nuclear option, resetting one of the iPads to factory settings and going thru possibly hours of resetting settings and downloading and setting apps, re-adding files etc. and see if it works.
Kind of time pressured too as home internet is changing within a few days from unlimited to limited bandwidth and previous VPN provider account expires in a week or so. Ugh.
Well, first tried resetting network settings only. Same problem. Went for the Erase All nuclear option and have a new problem!
iPad setup from fresh stalls at the selection of automatic software updates. First time I let it run maybe five minutes with a spinning segmented circle on the button I’d tapped. iPad would only respond to phyiscal buttons so was able to shut it down.Tried again, same. Third time I let it run a good 20 minutes before giving up.
Possibly related is that the clock display upper left shows California time even though I had selected a European location in earlier steps.
I guess things need to get worse before they get better!
So the only other thing I could think of was to connect stuck iPad to Mac (my iPhones have gotten fouled up over the years trying to connect by USB and clicking to update in its Finder window; I only update them now from themselves while connected to electricity, so it occured to me to try the other way around: device stuck on it own, try the Mac), and lo and behold clicking ‘set up as new’ set iPad off on its setup march.
Got it set up and spent next couple of hours deleting Apps, going thru every single Setting and level, adding back previous apps etc.
Started first with NordVPN and luckily it worked!
Sadly, it took many interactions over couple of months with ‘customer support Zendesk’ at NordVPN and a nuclear solution requiring several hours effort to get it to work. One of the worst iPad/iOS experience I’ve ever had.
So now I have to decide if I want to spend so many hours on my second iPad, or wipe it and give it to family or just put in Airplane mode and never connect to the Webs.
