Time Machine for Apple Mail not working with Catalina 10.15.1

With Apple Mail active on Mac under Catalina 10.15.1, if I then launch Time Machine to recover a lost email, Apple Mail immediately closes; thus, I can’t use Time Machine to recover emails. My Time Machine is on an external drive: USB G-Drive and has been running for two years.

I am having the same problem and so far have not found any solution.
