Switched carriers, number will expire for messages?

What does this mean? I have a new sim card, iPhone mini 13, ios 17.5.1.

Now. Just notified my number “will continue to be registered fir iMessage, “ But when I tap the > next to the number in iMessag settings, I still get the screen shot I posted. What gives? Ignore it?

Did you move your number to the new carrier? Maybe it went into a “between carriers” limbo for a while and will come back fully in a while.

The number works fine, messages too, but what happens in 29 days?

Check in Settings > General > About and scroll down to the SIM information. Make sure your carrier’s name is listed under the SIM.

Check Settings > Phone and make sure your number is listed in the field “My Number”.

I had switched from Verizon to US Mobile. Verizon works best out here in the boonies so they sent me a “Verizon” sim. They explained that it would indicate Verizon although USMobile is the carrier.

My concern is the notice that my phone number associated with Apple ID is “not associated with this phone.” And the unclear notice that
“it” will expire in 29 days. What does “it” refer to — my number or my phone?

How do I get Apple to associate my phone with my number….this is same phone and same number I have had for years.

Everything works fine - phone calls, messages.

So…do I ignore the message? Do I “remove the number from iMessage and facetime” . I think I tried that, then added the number back but it is still not associated with the phone. Have also restarted phone to no avail.

My only other thought is to sign out of iCloud but I am confused about option to keep copies of my icloud stuff - calendars/contacts etc. - and losing wallet stuff.

This could all be much ado about nothing?
(And corollary - if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it) ?

When I check settings for my Apple ID > This phone, it shows all the correct info for the phone and it says this device is trusted.

Since I paid for a year of service with USM, I don’t see how it can expire until year is up.

BUT — how to get Apple to associate my number with the phone. An issue with recognizing the new “Verizon” sim ?

You kept your phone no. and it properly got ported, right?

Does your phone no. show under Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. It should be listed and at least in the top list also have checkmark next to it.

Yes. That’s what the screenshot shows in my original post. Then below the note about expiring, is the expected ‘you can receive messages to and reply from “ with the same (and correct) number.

One other thought.
Since I terminated my original Verizon service immediately, USM gave me a Gsm esim and I removed the original Verizon sim card so I could still use my phone until I received the USM-Verizon sim card. USM walked me through the transition to the new sim card, step by step, including testing the phone.

I only discovered the expiration notice later while double checking settings.

Could the time gap between sim cards with esim in between cause this hiccup?

Sigh. Problem solved, but only after lengthy unsuccessful chat with USM followed by phone with Apple Support. I had already tried every combination of removing/inserting sim card, restarts, signing in and out of AppleID, and resetting network settings. Apple finally suggested total reset. That worked, so i will spend the rest of my day reprogramming all my settings, wallet, etc.

But at least no more expiration warnings.

Thanks to all for suggestions.

Glad to hear you were able to fix your problem, sorry to hear it involved total reset.

It’s such a drag when you have to resort to that and you end up losing all your settings that then have to be painstakingly restored by hand. Even having to reset just network settings can require a lot of manual cleanup effort. As the French would say, bon courage! :slightly_smiling_face:

Glad it worked out for you. A total reset is the iOS equivalent of thwacking the thing with a hammer (as illustrated by all the things you now have to do!), but sometimes it is the only way.
