"Support Ending for Intel-based Apps" -- Spurious Warning?

If the message you saw specifically mentioned MediaHuman Audio Converter it suggests the latest version you are running is still Intel. You can check whether it is Apple or Intel in Activity Monitor.

Just as a follow-up – based on what I see here, there’s some kind of bug where Apple is throwing up that warning on Universal apps where it should not be applicable. Maybe something was re-set with the 26.4 or 26.4.1 updates – I do know these started to pop more frequently after a recent Mac OS update, and I think that matches with the point at which I started getting ones that were wrong. I’ll have to do a more thorough search for Intel-only apps at some point between now and the move to 27, which won’t (obviously) be for several months. (I’ve never felt any inclination to use OS betas.)

The MediaHuman web site says “Intel, AMD or Apple silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) processors” and I’m on an M1 Pro machine … but you’re right – activity monitor still says Intel. Hadn’t thought of checking there. So how do I upgrade the MediaHuman app to M1?

You have to wait for maker of the MediaHuman app to release a Silicon (Apple) version. They have until September 2027 to do this, otherwise you will have to stay on macOS27, and not upgrade to macOS28.

FWIW, just adding I’ve had similar messages appear when opening latest versions of Graphic Converter and Keyboard Maestro; in my case both are Universal apps not using Rosetta on my Mac Studio. These only started after updating to 26.4.1 and have not continued to appear after popping up once.

Sounds like the probe function is using an expression like “if the app has Intel code”, instead of “if the app does not have Apple Silicon code”.

It appears any app that uses the Color Panel will cause the system to load the system Legacy Color Picker Extension which is Intel only, and then Apple will give this spurious warning.

Not very helpful.

As a followup to my post about Aquamacs, it seems to be in a semi-statis (looking at its Github) mainly due to the retirement from the project of the main person a year or so ago. So maybe there is no momentum to update it to universal or the Apple chip. Probably other volunteer projects are in the same situation and it’s time to move on from them. For me, I went back to good old GNU Emacs which is quite actively maintained and has support for many OS and chips.

I’ve been running this build for quite some time now: https://emacsformacos.com/

On my Linux PCs, I compile my own build, because there are a few things I like to customize, but I’ve never bothered doing this for macOS.

I haven’t personally gotten this warning for a Universal app, but a couple people over on the Quicken forum have reported getting it for Quicken even though that has been Universal since 2020. So I’m inclined towards there being a bug of some kind.

Thank you! This would make sense as a reason for these unexpected notifications.

If it is related to the colour picker I wonder if some setups have an old intel one hanging around in their library folder?

Apparently Mac TurboTax is not Apple Silicon native and Intuit says they have no plans to make such a version. Users should use the web version instead.

Idiots.

Weird experience. I opened BusyCal, my calendar app, and got the warning. I was 100% sure that it was Apple Silicon so I had no idea what was going on. When I “got info” on it, it noted it was a Universal app, but the “Open with Rosetta” checkbox was ticked. No idea how. I unticked it and the warning didn’t happen again.

I’m a long-time TT user so after I read your post, I did some searching. I couldn’t find any official announcements from Intuit. Have you seen something I missed?

If Intuit doesn’t update TT after Apple stops providing Rosetta, I will have to take a look at Parallels, Fusion, and Crossover; I really don’t want to use TT Online for privacy and security reasons.

@blm
Question: that link is from a user-powered message board (similar to Apple Support’s Community Discussions), right? Or is the person who made the post employed by Intuit?

I switched to H&R Block years ago (for many reasons) and have been happy with it. The 2025 version is Universal–and so is the 2024 and 2023 tax year app. 2022 was Intel.

In fact they already have an Apple version. When I asked them if they intended to upgrade, their auto-reply bot pointed me to it. I’d downloaded the latest Intel version. Thanks for your input.

Yes, that’s a good question. The user doesn’t appear to be employed by Intuit, but she’s tagged on the board as an Expert and Expert Alumni, so it doesn’t seem like she’d just make things up or pass along rumors. Still, until a universal binary is downloadable, there isn’t one.
