Sequoia now Mail unable to verify an outlook email address

After upgrading to Sequoia 15.0.1, running Mail 16.0, my formerly working j********@outlook.com email address can’t seem to be verified any longer. I can access email via the browser and Outlook app, so password is correct. But I’d like to keep all my accounts running under Mail. I know that Microsoft has been pushing for increased email security. Anyone else having this issue?

Microsoft emailed me several times this year that my Outlook email address would no longer support IMAP access as of September 16. For macOS delete your old account and set it up as an Exchange account. On iOS or iPadOS, there is a specific Outlook method when you add a new account.

Yes, I had no difficulty restoring functionality in the iPhone by deleting and recreating the account. The problem was getting the account set up on my Mac Studio. I ended up resorting to installing Microsoft’s Authenticator app on my iPhone, setting up the account there, and then recreating the personal account on the Mac as an Exchange account that I could then validate via the Authenticator app. Kludgy process, but it let me create the account and I can now receive mail directed to that outlook address within the Mail app.

I just wondered if you tried Microsoft Exchange in Mail. I suggest that if you can’t use that option then go to the App Store and download Outlook.add and use that. Just wish Apple would fix Mail, but I guess they have more pressing bugs in Sequoia to fix first.

Yes, I have Outlook and it was working on the Mac as expected there, but I prefer to get all my email using Mail. As above, after deleting the Outlook account yet again, using the browser to set up 2FA for the account this time using Microsoft’s Authenticator, and then re-adding the account – this time as an Exchange account, I was able to successfully verify and again receive my personal outlook account emails within Mail. FWIW, I have two additional workplace Exchange accounts that have continued to function normally in Mail throughout.

So, again, this happened because of a choice Microsoft made to stop supporting user id / password log in over IMAP. It is not a bug or a problem in the mail app.
