Sequoia introduced issues with NAS

I recently upgraded my Mac Mini M1 to Sequoia (I think I was on Monterey (the one before they updated the system preferences)).

Biggest problem since upgrading is my NAS disconnects regularly including while I am transferring data to it. Never had this type of problem before the upgrade.

Both My Time Machine drive (USB) and the NAS (mounted volume) also appear to dismount and remount when I leave my computer alone (overnight, etc.). No errors about not properly ejecting, though.

Mac is ethernet and wi-fi connected (I tried turning off wi-fi to see if that made a difference but it didn’t). NAS is ethernet, too.

It’s an older QNAP NAS.

Any ideas? This is very annoying.

I am not running Sequoia but I see the overnight disconnect on Sonoma. I use a Synology NAS. The Mac reconnects within about a minute of waking, no harm no foul.

There have been a lot of reports similar to yours regarding network data transfer problems. Most people who had the problem reported that disabling the MacOS Firewall fixed it.

When Apple released 15.1, many people reported they could use the Firewall again.

Thanks for reply.

I forgot to mention that I did disable macos firewall but it didn’t make a difference. I am currently on 15.1.

I too recently began having Sequoia & NAS problems. I have a QNAP NAS share that I have been keeping mounted on my desktop for years. After upgrading to Mac 15.1, Time Machine ™ refused to run when my Mac was locked. I don’t use the NAS for my TM backups, I have an external SSD for those backups. I tried turning the firewall off, I tried rebooting my NAS, I reinstalled Sequoia, I even wiped my TM SSD to do a fresh TM backup — didn’t make a difference, continued to tell me it couldn’t run TM backups when the Mac locked.

Some internet searching turned up several people saying Sequoia introduced an SMB bug. So I looked through my TM logs. I found repeated TM errors related to the SMB share on my desktop. Apparently TM was continually attempting to determine the status of the mounted NAS share but was prevented from accessing the share’s status. This caused TM to throw several errors per minute. When I turned off the NAS’s SMB protocol and mounted the share to my Mac desktop using AFP, the TM errors immediately stopped. TM is now able to run again when the Mac is locked. I hope Apple fixes this in 15.2.
