Selling my old iPad and the buyer wants to know the SN

I am selling my old iPad for a smaller, newer one (my 12.9 is a beautiful lug but heavy) and the buyer is asking for serial number. Other than finding out when it was made, is this anything of a security risk to give it out before they actually have it? It can’t be used in any way, can it?

The S/N can be used to determine if the device is stolen or not - which is probably why the buyer wants it.

As for being used as a conduit for your personal information, I don’t think so. Just make sure you wipe the device before giving it to the buyer. See also What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Note also that the buyer will have access to that number as soon as you give it to him. So it’s not like giving him the number in advance will change much.

I’m guessing they want to verify the model and memory…but I can’t think of anything else that would do for them.
