I’ve been scanning since the days of Umax, Linotype and Snapscan with SCSI cables and OS7.
Today I’ve hit a problem.
Mac Mini M2 fully up to date and a Canon all in one.
Image Capture reports that it cannot open a connection to the scanner (error -21345), despite the fact that i’m prinitng to the same device via USB.
Several attempts give the same result.
Here’s the baffling bit, VueScan can, and it can scan.
The last time I used Image Capture (which I use regularly to scan receipts and things that don’t need the capabilities of VueScan) would have been just before the 15.4 update came along.
Is anyone else seeing anything similar?
VueScan may work while Image Capture does not because VueScan (usually) has its own built-in drivers and does not use macOS drivers (which Image Capture uses).
Without knowing anything else, I’d check to see if Canon has an updated Image Capture driver. See if there’s something to download from Canon’s web site.
Also, if you haven’t already done so, run a system software update while the scanner is connected and powered-on. Apple doesn’t install printer/scanner drivers for equipment it can’t detect. If something in the latest macOS update requires a new driver, and the scanner was not powered-on during that update, then the updated scanner driver may not have gotten installed. A software update while the scanner is powered should cause the updated driver to be downloaded and installed.
Thanks David.
According to Canon my device is not supported on Sequoia, although it prints OK.
Just checking my slide scanner, Image capture can’t see it either.
It looks as though I’ll have to use VueScan for those receipts from now on.
What is the specific scanner that you have?
Hi Josehill
It’s the scanner built in to my Canon MP560 all-in-one.
Worked fine until Sequoia.
Referring back to @Shamino’s post, it looks like the last “Image Capture” (aka “ICA”) driver that Canon released for this model dates back to Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11).
I would try to see if a newly installed El Capitan ICA driver will work. I can’t guarantee that it will, but more often than not, this approach has succeeded with other scanner models after their manufacturer stopped supporting them.
- Go to the Canon Support page for your country for the MP560 and look for “Software & Drivers”.
- Select “Mac OS X El Capitan” as the OS version and then look for a file with a name like “ICA Driver Ver. 4.0.0 (Mac)”.
- Download it and run the installer.
You’ll need to restart any ICA tools (like Preview.app or Image Capture.app) that are open before they will recognize the driver. Maybe even restart the computer, but I don’t think that will be necessary.
Thanks for that.
I’m away to Spain tonight for a few weeks so Ill give it a go whenI get back.
