Safari "Share Via Email" extension replaced by Brave

A weird problem popped up this week and I’m not sure where to look nor how to fix it. I use Safari as my main browser, but have a few others I use for specific tasks. On Monday, I noticed that if I use the long-time shortcut “Shift-Command I” to email a webpage as “Reader view”, instead, the Brave Browser opens. In fact, the Share icon reflects this as well (see below)

as does the System Settings / Extensions

I tried deleting the Brave preference file, restarting, cursing, but no luck. Is there a specific file I should look for where these extension mappings are kept? What else can I try? Totally baffled.

(2017 MBP, Ventura 13.7.6, Safari 18.5, Brave 1.79.123 )

What’s your default mail client set to? If it got set to Brave (possibly as a result of a web-mail service requesting the change), that would do it.

See Change the default web browser or email app on Mac - Apple Support for information on how you can set it back.
